I wrote an item recently on cool chairs. It got me to thinking how easy it will be to setup a little business creating really funky chairs beyond materials found for free or nearly free just about anyplace. It is a lot easier to find used industrial parts than people realize. Often these parts might be cleaned up, polished, stained or painted with a little creativity, changed into beautiful furnishings that double as terrific conversation items.
I owned a bar once upon a time and we really bootstrapped it. We were short on set up money and needed a bunch of Wood Top Coffee Table. These tables also had to be quite durable as our clientele tended to drink and keep on a lot. I'll admit that it wasn't me but my partner Scott that created the theory. Industrial spools. We found an area in Montreal that sold and re-sold huge industrial spools, the kind that will have a few miles of telephone wire, between two to ten feet in diameter. We rented a van and took place there. The place was totally fine with us helping ourselves in order to six spools, each about four feet high and four feet in diameter. We simply sanded them down and applied generous levels of shellac. They proved beautifully.
Here certainly are a couple chair ideas. Go exploring your personal town and find out and you'll discover discarded wooden window blinds. Cut these to around three feet wide stain and generously clear-coat them. You'll need to cut out a support form that you should find easily enough on the net by trying to find 'window blind chair'. Cheap plywood has a great balance. Cut the two support forms and glue/nail all this in position. After a few cracks at it you'll turn out to be capable of build wonderfully cool chairs that cost next to nothing and can easily be sold for $100.00. The second is simply an old steel drum. These might be found anywhere for free and only have to have a good cleaning and some clear coat finish. Take a look at the photo. You only intend to make a great cut, cover the edge with rubber edging and put in a cheap cushion and some $10.00 legs. Again - this will sell for $100.00 easy.
Hope you employ these ideas to expand you're own repertoire of cool designs. See what you could find for free where you live and let your imagination fly.
